Ecological Landscaping Techniques
Do you want to be a greener gardener or professional landscaper? This three-part class, offered for the first time by the Society’s horticulture staff, will focus on landscaping practices based on ecological principles. Ecological landscaping emphasizes techniques designed to enhance and preserve floral and faunal diversity both above and below the soil line, and to provide sustainability over the long term. Some techniques have been developed to prevent alteration of existing soil biota and hydrology, while others, such as compost and compost tea, are intended to improve soil function and plant health. Using Garden in the Woods as a case study, the instructors will demonstrate and provide hands-on training on approaches to site analysis, choosing appropriate plant material for each site, and mitigation of adverse effects of past land uses. Participants should be prepared for some outdoor activities, including digging and compost tea making.
