Middlesex Fells is a 2060-acre natural treasure just north of Boston, which includes parts of five cities and towns. Geological and biological forces, thousands of years of human use and recent land protection efforts have shaped this area into a unique urban wilderness. A diverse landscape of rocky hills (fells), oak and hickory forests, ponds, wetlands, vernal pools, panoramic vistas, and intriguing geological features distinguish this woodland. Cypripedium acaule (pink lady’s-slipper) should be in abundant bloom. Look also for teaberry, Indian soap, and the “toilet paper tree.” Bring a lunch, water, and a hand lens if you have one.
