Well known to rock climbers and vacationers who enjoy sweeping views of the Saco River Valley from atop its 500-foot granite face, Cathedral Ledge is also a botanical destination. Along the eastern flank of this peak is a rich, rocky slope that supports bountiful spring-ephemeral flora. Travel along the cliff base, identifying violets, sedges, crowfoots, and many others. Look at expanding ferns and learn to identify them by their partially coiled leaves. Summit the small peak and survey the dry cliff-top flora as well. This intermediate level class is designed for students with a basic understanding of identification and vocabulary who want to further their proficiency. Special challenges can be provided for more advanced students. Bring a copy of the new Flora Novae Angliae if possible. Expect loose, uneven ground and come prepared for the weather. Bring a bag lunch, hand lens, and ample water.
