This hands-on workshop teaches the basics of map and compass use and provides an introduction to online mapping tools such as Google Earth, Bing Maps, and online GIS Servers. Each of these tools continues to have a use in the field sciences for safety, trip planning, and documentation of a neat find. Through a combination of lecture and hands-on practice, gain comfort with the wide range of tools at your fingertips for mapping and delineating, looking at different kinds of maps and their features, and learning how they relate to your experience. If you have them, bring a compass, a topographic map of a region you like to visit, a GPS unit, an iPad or laptop computer.
