Most of New England has acidic geology, mainly granite and its derivatives, but western Massachusetts has areas with calcareous rock that allow a more diverse flora, including uncommon ferns. At this rich site, we will look for a couple of dozen fern species, including Spleenworts, Woodsias, Beech, Maidenhair, and Fragile Ferns (although some may be late in their season). We will discuss field identification techniques. Expect moderate hiking and some poison ivy.
